Organic shingles are made from waste recycled paper, and they are saturated with asphalt, granules, and adhesive salts to make them waterproof. Fiberglass shingles are made out of glass fibers which are then coated with asphalt and mineral granules which make them waterproof. Even though organic shingles are more durable than those made out of fiberglass, they are more combustible. Even though they are made out of paper, they are not that much friendly toward nature. Today, fiberglass asphalt shingles are gradually replacing the organic shingles.

Biggest advantage asphalt shingles have to offer is the low initial price. This roofing material is the most affordable roofing option in the United States so is not that much of a surprise that most homeowners opt for it. Your asphalt shingles can look like wood shakes or even slate. They are relatively easy to install, and they can be installed correctly by most of the roofers in the United States or even you.

What we will tell you is that asphalt shingles have their share of disadvantages. They can get easily damaged if they are installed during cold weather, attic ventilation can damage them if you opt for cheaper asphalt shingles then be aware because high winds can easily lift them up. They are not resistant to big temperature differences, and they don’t perform that well in warm climates. Slate and Tile as a Roofing Solution

Slate and Tile as a Roofing Solution

How to pick the right slate or tile for your home

There are many things to take into consideration when choosing the right roofing material for your home. Especially if you make a choice between two premium, high-quality materials such as slate and tile. Most of the people think that process of choosing is straightforward just like they think that choosing a right commercial roofing system is simple but that is not true. You need to think about the pitch of your roof, strength of your roof support structure and the weight of the roofing material which needs to be installed on your property. We will try to inform you about both of these materials and their requirements in order to help you with the decision when the time comes. So here are the things you should take into consideration when opting between these two.

Materials

You can choose between several different materials when talking about slate and tiles.

Clay – Clay is durable, and it can quickly boost the curb appeal of your property. They come in many different colors, shapes, textures and sizes. People often associate them with Mediterranean houses. Clay tiles offer excellent durability and aesthetics.

Concrete – Concrete is an exquisite alternative to other natural materials. It is more affordable, and it also comes in various shapes, textures, sizes and colors. You can quickly match concrete tiles with any architectural style of your property.

Slate – Slate is made out of natural stone. It is extremely durable, and it is considered as one of the most, if not the most, beautiful roofing materials available today. This is a roofing material for a lifetime.

Pitch

The angle of your roofing system will determine which roofing material will you install on your property. Every roofing product will be displayed in the material brochure. Your roofing contractor can tell you which roofing material would fit best on your property.

Profile/Color/Texture

Every of these roofing materials will come in many different textures, colors, and shapes, its up to you to decide which one will be best for the exterior design of your home.

Design of your roofing system

If your roofing system has a sophisticated design with many corners which will require tile to get cut maybe, your better option would be smaller concrete or clay tiles.

 Weight

These roofing materials are heavier than other roofing materials, and not every roofing support structure will be able to withstand all that extra weight. For example, if you have an asphalt shingle roof which is relatively light in weight that doesn’t mean that your roofing support structure will be able to hold the weight of clay or slate roofing system.

Always remember, hiring a skilled, certified and experienced contractor is of vital importance. The professional roofing contractor will know exactly what to do and how to do it to provide you with a new roofing system which won’t break in the matter of years. Clay, concrete and slate are premium roofing materials that can last up to a century or even more if they are maintained regularly and adequately. They are roofing systems for life so make sure that you make all the right decisions.

And again, special thanks to David Piterski from A&H Roofing for helping me with this bog post.

Your Roof And Storm

Your Roof And Storm

What Effect Can Storm Have On Your Roof?

No matter where you live, we are frequently under fire by sudden and massive storms. Rain, snow, and the wind are all elements that could damage your roofing system. Damage caused by a storm can vary, depending on the power of the storm. Roofing systems often require repairs after being exposed to severe hail or high winds.

After an intense storm you don’t always see visual damage to your roof, and also, you might think everything is in order. Then one day, you notice that leak is present in your home. That means that your roof was damaged during the storm. You should not worry; you are not the only person to experience that kind of a problem. Many people go on with their lives until they notice that there is some major issue present. But don’t get fooled, even the tamest storms can cause roof damages.

Wind

If you’ve experienced a storm with high amounts of wind, your roofing systems shingles have most likely shed a great deal of the granules. That can be the problem because they need to remain efficient in keeping the water out of your home. Missing out on tiles or shingles can leave your roofing system entirely vulnerable to penetrating water, and it could additionally ruin the wooden roof support frame.

Trees

It’s possible that your roofing system is damaged if you notice that there are little branches on the ground around your home. Tree branches can create openings that lead right into the roofing system or roof support structure, making the location susceptible to water damage that may result in wood rot and total roof replacement. This is a simple repair if only a small area of the roofing system is impacted. Nevertheless, letting damage such as this sit around without getting it fixed by a professional could cause the damage to spread out rapidly, and that will lead you and your home to expensive repairs.

Rain

A strong, healthy roofing system isn’t impacted by rainfall alone. Nonetheless, a roof that has any damage or susceptibility will just be worsened by the beginning of the next rain. Water damage, leaking places, and also wood rot are one of the most probable impacts of extreme rain to an already damaged roof covering. That is the main reason you should have your roof inspected regularly. Fixing small, inexpensive problems can save you a lot of headache and money.

Snow

If you live in a cold climate, then snow is something you are familiar. During the winter season, your roof is constantly exposed to cold weather, ice and snow. It is crucial for you to clear your roof during that time. Raking snow is the best way to go. Old snow is wet, and if it sits long enough on your roof, it can cause severe damage.

If you live in tornado prone areas, as a responsible homeowner you should consider your homeowner’s insurance policy as an appropriate financial resource for tornado damaged roofing system repair work. Usually, damage caused by a tornado or a hurricane is covered under the majority of property owner’s insurance coverage.

There’s no question regarding it – storms, and harsh climate can cause trouble for property owners. Your roofing system is at risk under that kind of conditions. However, a tornado or hurricane can do serious harm, and it is good to have the knowledge, understanding and some solutions about how storms influence your roof and also just what you can do to repair or replace it according to David Piterski from A&H Forensic Roofing, LLC. Roof damage caused by a storm is not easy to repair so if you think that your roof might be damaged by the severe storm, the best thing to do is to contact your local roofing contractor before a small problem becomes the big one. Hailstorm is nothing to joke with.

Hiring Roofing Contractors – Personal Experience

Hiring Roofing Contractors – Personal Experience

A while ago, my friend Steve was building his dream house. It was his lifelong dream of creating that house and last year he finally did it. It has beautiful garden, it has swimming pool and basketball court. His attic was marvelously done. He put his old stuff there and when I visited him, I always went there to chill. He has his library, gramophone with old records and he created beautiful atmosphere like in some European cafés that I have visited once. He was really happy when he finished it and he forgot about all the difficulties that he had while he was building that house. And believe me, he had difficulties. I have listened to all his problems for some time, but I understood him eventually.

He finally done it and now he doesn’t have to think about it. But I remembered and I want to share his story with you. Why? Well, not to repeat his mistakes. He was building that house for a long time, but he had most of his problems with roof. His roofing contractor wasn’t the right guy and he had to change them several times. His final product was brilliant, but there were a lot of mistakes before. So I will tell you what you need to know about roofing.

It’s not just color you need to know about your future roof. You have to think about the material of roof as well. And the best way is to pick the right contractor – the one that proved his service. My friend had his first contractor who done his job. However, he done completely opposite of what my friend required of him. They had problem with the final product and that is one of the things you need to discuss with your future contractor.

Of course, at the beginning of your roofing project, you must interview a lot of contractors to find the right one. Steve didn’t do that. He asked his brother for the roofer brother hired and he hired him in the end. Although that’s not a bad strategy (to ask your friends and family about someone who had done his job well) they had different opinions and that was wrong. I saw Steve’s brother house and it was solid work, however that contractor wasn’t the right guy for Steve’s dream house.

He hired his second contractor by looking the ads in the Craigslist. He found some guy who had the most reasonable prices. Steve wanted to save some money and hired him. However, it turned out it was some crook. He didn’t have the licenses and building permits. That’s one of the more important things to ask your future contractor – to show you the license and some previous works.

You cannot afford problems to yourself. Sure, his price was tempting, but you cannot think about saving some money in this occasion. When Steve thought about his roof, he had in mind his beautiful attic and that’s okay, but roof is the thing that cover your house from all weather conditions, and thus it is the most important part of your house.

So when he hired the third contractor, everything was fine. He had licenses, he had huge experience and his final product matched Steve’s final draft. As you can see from this article, it is very important to choose an appropriate roofing contractor since you want to avoid possible problems. Ask around – via word of mouth, look for it in the Craigslist or just call someone randomly and see for yourself.
